Making a Birch Bark Canoe

This documentary by the National Film Board of Canada was filmed in 1971. It is fairly long, 57 minutes, and has no dialog, background music, or titles, justCésar Newashish making a canoe from start to finish using only an axe, awl, and knife!

I first saw this video in the 70s and have been trying to find it again ever since. I finally stumbled into it yesterday and am posting a link here. It is mesmerizing so make sure you have time to watch it all the way through.

César Newashish, a 67-year-old Atikamekw of the Manawan Reserve north of Montreal, uses only birchbark, cedar splints, spruce roots and gum.
